Comparing single-phase thermal hydraulic performance of a right and left turn twisted tape insert in a tube

Single-phase heat transfer and pressure drop tests were conducted in a tube with two types of twisted tapes. Each tape had exactly similar physical parameters made the same material except that each an opposite twist resulted clockwise anticlockwise flow swirl, i.e., left turn right turn, respectively. type ratio 4 5.5 on 180° twist. The tapes tested tube-in-tube exchanger having 2 m length. internal 19.05 mm outer diameter 1.65 wall thickness. Fresh water 30% water/glycol solution used as cold hot fluids. Experiments performed Reynolds number varying between 2500 11,500 at Prandtl numbers 9 14. Heat enhancement was observed compared to plain all operating conditions 6–7% higher thermal performance tighter tape. Left Turn showed slightly better beyond Re > 8000 4000. Similar trends for drop. This is first time study subject initiated assuming earth’s rotational effect “could” play role swirl pattern inside conduit.
